Individual particle positions?

Can the position of individual particles be read from a ParticleSystem instance?  My current understanding leads me to believe that this isn't possible, but it could save me some time & effort if it is.  Perhaps with a CpuParticleProcessor instead of the usual GPUParticleProcessor?  It'd be interesting if you'd like to go into detail, but a simple yes/no response is all I'm looking for.
